Rorke's Drift Battlefields, Zululand

Immerse yourself in landscapes steeped in history at the famous Zululand destination, Rorke's Drift.

The landscape lover will not fail to be impressed by this fantastically inspiring region. Sweeping plains steeped in history will be your muse as you explore and paint the famous battlefields of South Africa.

This course is centred around landscape and cultural-influence and is tutored by Christine Lamberth, who is a fully qualified teacher and is highly proficient in most mediums. She has sold work worldwide and is also a highly accomplished photographer. Christine will be taking you into the bush for workshops, this is a unique experience and one of the few places in Africa you can work in the bush in safety, without the need for vehicles.

You will be staying at the secluded and tranquil Rorke's Drift Lodge, nestled on the side of the Sinqindi Mountain and providing unrivalled views over the battlefield plains. From here you can walk through the fields or view the spectacular birdlife, or simply sit underneath one of the giant trees and sketch. You can also take hikes into the hills or ride horseback through the trails.

The Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore the famous battlegrounds of the region. Tours can be arranged with the in-house guide who will escort you on a journey to discover the history of the great battles of the area, including Isandlwana, the defence of Rorke's Drift, Fugitive's Trail and Blood River. You can also hear the story of the Zulu warriors, related to you by your expert Zulu guide. Experience the hardships, the victories, the defeats and the tragedies of a day at war in Africa.

In the evenings you can engage in a spot of star-gazing, as the area is free from light pollution and the night skies of the Southern Hemisphere are awe-inspiring. Each night a fire is lit on the deck so guests can enjoy good conversation and generous glasses of South African wine by the firelight, and discuss the excitement of the day.

This is the perfect trip for those who love to paint landscapes. The landscapes you will find here are not only of the most incredible beauty, but are internationally renowned as one of the most historically notable and poignant parts of the world.

Following your 5 night stay at Rorke's Drift, we recommend you maximise your stay in Southern Africa and explore more of what this beautiful Continent has to offer.
