A Brush with Nauture
City Heights to Starry Nights

From the Mother City of Cape Town to the Big 5 territory of the Madikwe Game Reserve.

Begin your holiday in the cosmopolitan wonderland of Cape Town. Perched between the ocean and the mountain, with a National Park at its heart, Cape town is a place to relax, explore and adjust to the vibrancy of Africa. It is the oldest city in the country and has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years. It also features the official top five attractions in South Africa which should appear on everyone's itinerary. Don't miss a trip to the top of the stunning Table Mountain; the V&A Waterfront, a unique cosmopolitan experience on a working harbour; Robben Island, the former prison home to Nelson Mandela; the Cape Town wine routes, where some of the world's best wines are produced and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, internationally acclaimed as one of the greatest botanical gardens of the world. You will be spoilt for choices of restaurants, cafes and bars to suit all palettes. There is also lots of live music, art exhibitions, museums, theatre, opera and ballet, as well as outdoor symphony concerts all year round.

During your stay in Cape Town you will be residing at Glen Avon guesthouse in the centre of the Constantia Winelands, a beautiful building of Cape Dutch architecture, where the host family will cater to your every comfort. From here you can paint, sketch, relax and explore with ease and in fantastic surrounds. Ease into your creativity as slowly or as quickly as you choose. We can schedule a Cape Town artist to join you during your stay in the city as little or as often as you wish, or use your time here to relax until the painting begins intensively during your adventure into the bush...

Next you head into Madikwe Game Reserve in the North-West province of South Africa, now one the country's prime safari locations. This stunning part of Africa is the perfect destination for the wildlife enthusiast; if you have ever wanted to paint the world's most incredible animals, this is the place for you.

To enter Madikwe is to stand at the very threshold of wilderness Africa. It is home to 66 large mammal species including the Big Five, elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino, as well as other endangered species such as wild dog and cheetah. The park also boasts over 300 species of resident and migrant birds, many of which are rare and endangered. It is a near-perfect ecological environment where every plant, animal and insect forms an essential part of an intricate web of survival. The landscapes in this malaria-free reserve are breath-taking, with sweeping plains, open grasslands, exotic woodlands and towering rocky hills.

This reserve is particularly important in terms of conservation; it is groundbreaking in its methods of management and its approach to cultural and economic conservation efforts, aiming to benefit the local communities as well as the wildlife of the area. In 1991 this Park embarked on the largest ever translocation of game in the world, in which 10,000 animals of 28 different species were moved here in Operation Phoenix, which was successfully completed in 1997. The Park also enjoys a special feature in its unique location, a transition zone on the edges of the Kalahari where a number of very rare species occur naturally.

During your stay at Madikwe you will be treated to a unique tutoring experience by your artist and guide, Dave Hadaway. Dave is a very well-known wildlife artist who has exhibited and sold work worldwide, and his knowledge of the wildlife and bush of South Africa is first rate. You will be journeying with him into the bush, on game drives and guided walks, to sketch, photograph and paint the wildlife of Africa as you encounter it.

You will be residing at the beautiful Motswiri Private Safari Lodge. This exclusively appointed lodge overlooks a waterhole frequented by elephant families and other big game. Hidden in the bush, this is an exclusive lodge offering a maximum of 10 guests a bush experience which is impossible to replicate in larger concerns, and the complex will be booked exclusively for the group of artists. Every need will be catered for and the lodge is an ideal setting for painting and sketching. It is an intimate homely setting offering complete privacy and tranquillity.

This is African bush at its best, and there is no finer way to view it than through the eyes of the artist.

If you are looking for a tailor made painting trip to Southern Africa for your art group, club or friends, we can discuss your individual requirements.
