We have various dates available throughout the year – please ask for details.
A classic tour of South Africa aptly described as a world in one country. Combine some time in the "Mother City" of Cape Town with its modern first-world "buzz" and myriad attractions including Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Gardens, Robben Island, the Winelands of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, the V & A Waterfront with its many excellent restaurants, the Cape Peninsula, the list is endless – with the majestic Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a thrilling trip into one of South Africa’s many Big-5 Game Reserves.
We normally recommend arriving in South Africa on a Sunday when it’s quieter and you don’t object to ‘losing’ a day as you recover from the overnight flight from the UK.
Day 1:
Meet your professional artist and guide for your South African tour at London Heathrow Airport who will help you through the check-in and departure details prior to boarding your overnight non-stop flight to Cape Town.
Day 2:
Arrive Cape Town International Airport where you will be met by our airport representative, who will settle any immediate concerns you may have, before leading you to your waiting vehicles and directing you towards your first destination. Breakwater Lodge, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.
One of our favourite destinations, the Breakwater Lodge is conveniently placed near the famous V&A Waterfront.
This is an excellent focus for shopping, cafes, restaurants, port and city attractions – it was in fact an old prison, comfortably rebuilt as a hotel. It is well placed for walking out for evening meals and for local shopping.
There will be ample opportunity to enjoy the many sights in and around the city and peninsula and we have arranged for plenty of time to be spent on various painting excursions with your resident artist during your time here.
5 nights Bed & Breakfast.
Day 7:
This morning you make your way back to Cape Town airport where you catch a domestic flight to Durban. There you connect with your waiting vehicles before making your way inland through the stunning KwaZulu-Natal countryside towards Didima Camp in the magnificent Central Drakensberg.
We have selected this delightful and luxurious new camp in the Drakensberg as the group’s next destination. Didima is set in the statuesque Cathedral Peak region of the mountains, with its theme being a tribute to the San people, whose rock art paintings are found throughout the area.
The recently opened camp has chalets built in the style of caves, each with two semi-detached units. There are self-catering facilities in one of the chalets.
The scenery and walks around the Drakensberg are legendary. There is something for everyone and marvellous painting opportunities. We think the group will find this a peaceful, private and memorable way to look around some of the region’s highlights. The standards set here are very high and the camp is now a KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife flagship. We believe the Drakensberg Mountains richly deserve their recently awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site accreditation. You cannot be anything other than inspired to paint in such magnificent surroundings. 5 nights Dinner, Bed & Breakfast.
Day 12: Hilltop Camp, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve.
On to your last port-of-call, probably the most thrilling item of the tour. No holiday here is complete without a trip to the bush and this is where you will now head, to stay at the country’s oldest-established and most traditionally run of game reserves, where the white rhino was saved from extinction in the early 1970s. You will stay in chalets in the flagship camp where there is a swimming pool, restaurant, shop, petrol station and daily game walks and drives.
You will quickly adjust to the rhythm of the bush, and be hypnotized by its magic – the smells and sounds, the sights of the Big Five and many other game and bird species. It is both relaxing and exciting, leaving a wonderful imprint of Africa as you end your time here. Ample opportunities for lots of wonderful painting and for collecting research material to take back home with you.
3 nights Dinner, Bed & Breakfast + daily game drive.
Day 15:
All good things must come to an end and today you must make your way to Johannesburg, stopping to enjoy the many scenic delights such as the Sterkfontein Dam and Oliviershoek Pass as you climb out of the lowveld onto the highveld, and places to enjoy lunch. On arrival at the airport you will be assisted with your baggage and check-in procedures before catching your return flight to London. The shopping facilities within the departure lounge are now equal to any other International airport, due to substantial recent upgrading.
